A journey to Nantes

Nantes is a major city in north-western France, located in the Loire-Atlantique department and the Pays-de-la-Loire region (not the Brittany region as you might imagine, although the city previously housed the Dukes of Brittany), at the confluence of the Loire and Erdre rivers.

A lively and active city, the 6th largest city in France, Nantes is a pleasant city ("Time" magazine named it the most liveable city in France ") and is also a very interesting city: a visit is recommended if you are in the area.

Explore Nantes

The heart of the city is the region around the castle of the Dukes of Brittany; there is much to discover in the castle and in the streets surrounding it. Like many cities of this size, you can have fun wandering the streets and discovering hidden corners.

Château des Ducs de Bretagne

The 1598th-century Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne played an important role in the history of the region, culminating in the Edict of Nantes in XNUMX, which ended the terrible Wars of Religion in France. The castle includes defensive elements such as the fortifications and towers that surround it, but also more luxurious elements in the interior buildings, which testify to its role as a residential palace.

The buildings, spread around the open-air patio within the castle grounds, cover an important period of history from the 14th to the 18th century - from which they also incorporate a wide range of styles. Highlights include the Grand Logis, the keep, and the vast Nantes museum which is housed in the castle buildings.

Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul

Nantes Cathedral, which took 450 years to build, sits just north of the castle. The cathedral is in Gothic style, the facade of which includes two large square towers on either side of the richly decorated entrance. The high interior is bright and light, with interesting modern stained glass windows. Don't forget to visit the marble tomb of Francis II and his wife, perhaps the highlight of a visit to the cathedral. If possible, you should also try to see the cathedral in the evening, when it is lighted and very attractive.

Jardin des Plantes and other gardens

Located to the northeast of the castle and the cathedral, the Jardin des Plantes covers seven hectares and contains an impressive array of plants, whether in gardens or in tropical greenhouses. These gardens are certainly a highlight of a visit to Nantes and are very easy to access from the city center.

The Japanese Gardens on the island next to the Quai de Versailles contain a few specimens of Japanese trees and carefully landscaped fountains. Another interesting garden is the Parc du Grand Blottereau, east of the city center.

Architecture and buildings

If you explore Nantes to the west of the castle you will be able to see the architecture and buildings of the cobbled streets of the medieval old town with many impressive half-timbered houses and also the more recent (XNUMXth century) townhouses. The area around and between Place Royale and Place Grasslin is the most interesting for visitors, and includes Rue Crébillon, in the heart of Nantes shopping center.

A highlight in the mall is the Passage Pomeraye, an arcade of shops and art galleries with a glass roof, statues and stone columns. Some of the most impressive 18th century houses can be found along the Quai de la Fosse and along the banks of the Loire River.

Cross the river to discover the old biscuit factory, now transformed into a modern arts center and bar. Do not forget to go to the top of the tower of the old factory in order to enjoy the beautiful views of the city.
