Airbnb Energy Savings: Airbnb's Sustainable Hosting Plan

In this autumn of 2022, the theme of energy saving continues to make ink flow. Shut down power stations, military conflicts, household consumption and government announcements are all topics regularly discussed in the media. At the same time, Airbnb rental is also concerned. If renting accommodation on Airbnb is particularly profitable, the supply of energy to the accommodation is one of the growing costs. The consumption of Airbnb rentals is rising at the same rate as the prices of gas, electricity and other energy sources. What means are available to owners to limit this increase in charges related to the energy consumption of their rental?

Airbnb energy saving, same fight as for the main residence:

Before considering a reduction in the energy expenditure of a rental, it is essential to understand what are the most important expenditure items. Unfortunately, the answer is not the one expected. The most important positions are often those on which we can only act a little. Below, the average energy expenditure of a dwelling:

Generally accepted average consumption:

  • Heating: 55%
  • Cumulative: 22%
  • Multimedia: 8%
  • Fridge: 7%
  • Cooking: 6%
purchase of an Airbnb rental

We note that the bulk of the energy expenditure of a dwelling, more than three quarters, comes from heating: heating of the dwelling (55%) and water (22%). Two hobbyhorses that we find it difficult to sacrifice. However, solutions exist even if these generate substantial financial expenses but also major logistical constraints, in particular for reducing expenses related to heating the house or apartment.

This energy reduction goes first through the increase in performance and by this, we often imply insulation. However, insulation is a major finishing job that quickly requires substantial work with the purchase of expensive materials and labor. Hence the fact that the French State has set up numerous aids for renovation, including the one that everyone knows: Ma Prim' Rénov'. The objective: to allow owners to carry out energy renovation work on their homes at a lower cost.

“Many landlords already realize the value of saving energy in their Airbnb rental. However, it is true that the procedures are particularly complicated and the costs very high, especially with regard to the insulation of housing when everything has to be redone. Some Airbnb rentals, although maintained, are aging and have difficulty meeting current energy and economic challenges. State aid is well known and Airbnb's recent initiative will certainly be greatly appreciated since it is based on concrete and useful elements for hosts. » Trésor, director of our Reims Concierge.

Airbnb's sustainable hosting plan to the rescue:

In the case of Airbnb rentals, there is no dedicated government plan in place. Hosts are therefore in the exact same position as any other landlord. To allow hosts and tenants to better understand the issue of energy saving, Airbnb has set up a Hosting Plan. What is it about ?

Airbnb's sustainable accommodation plan is a plan financed up to 1 million euros intended to support owners in 3 objectives:

  • Renovating their home
  • Reducing carbon emissions
  • Savings on long-term energy bills

First of all, this plan involves a partnership with Effy, a company specializing in energy renovation work for individuals whose head office is based in France. this partnership allows guests to call on Effy to estimate potential savings, renovation work to be undertaken, as well as the assistance that owners can perceive (MaPrimRénov', energy certificate, etc.). A valuable aid in procedures known to be long, complex and very technical for laymen of energy efficiency.

Second point not to be missed: Airbnb offers all hosts in France (subject to conditions of course) aid of €1000 to €2200 to undertake renovation work, in addition to any state aid granted. A sum which, if it will never cover the amounts incurred, will significantly reduce the bill for owners involved in major renovation work. This aid concerns each act of renovation (insulation, change of heating system, etc.).

Third point, awareness. Since there is no fight for energy saving without soldiers, Airbnb wishes to communicate and actively inform around the theme of energy saving. To do this, the travel company has set up an awareness campaign and developed a dedicated resource center to find reliable information on this very obscure topic of energy savings. A significant initiative accessible to all guests: https://www.airbnb.fr/resources/hosting-homes/t/sustainability-49
