French people's favorites for international travel in 2024

After sharing the top global and French destinations, Airbnb shares with us the international travel intentions of French people. And it would not be an understatement to say that the destinations are varied and will allow our fellow travelers to discover very different horizons from one destination to another.

The favorite sport of the French seems to determine the first destination of this top Airbnb. Football brings Abidjan, in Ivory Coast, to first place on this list thanks to the 2024 African Football Cup. This large-scale event will be held at the start of the year, from January 13 to February 11 . As with the Paris Olympics, it seems that temporary events are capable of generating considerable search volumes on the Airbnb platform.

Here is the list of the 10 international cities targeted by the French in 2024:

  1. Abidjan, Ivory Coast
  2. Mykonos – Greece
  3. Lanzarote – Spain
  4. Quebec – Canada
  5. Marrakech, Morocco
  6. Edinburgh – Scotland
  7. Osaka – Japan
  8. Kyoto – Japan
  9. Hanoi–Vietnam
  10. Olbia – Italy

The view of Françoise, concierge director in Annecy:

Indeed, football is one of the most popular sports here and it seems inevitable that it brings crowds to come. However, this first place remains almost surprising. The reason is certainly to be found in the way in which this data was collected: from January to September 2023. Considering that this event takes place at the beginning of the year, there is a good chance that it will have seen its maximum number of searches. while the other destinations are still only at the beginning of their search intentions for 2024. The temporality of searches is very fragmented throughout the year depending on the destinations, this is a phenomenon that we regularly see in our concierge service in Annecy. However, it remains undeniable that sport and football in particular have a very strong impact on seasonal rentals, particularly during international events such as the African Cup here.

Greece, Spain, Canada, Morocco, Scotland and even Italy are very popular destinations. Some for their proximity to France while offering a significant change of scenery and others like Canada for this little alternative side to the French-speaking culture that we know. The presence of Japan and Vietnam shows the growing trend of Asian countries in the affect of the French. At first glance, we might think of young, active travelers who are fans of Japanese culture, but that would certainly be simplistic, as Japan and Asia have already benefited from a growing reputation among the French for several years.
